Planting native plants in Palm Beach is ‘just smart landscaping’

I’ve discussed the importance of native plants for the survival of our pollinators and birds, but I haven’t really explained why invasives are so damaging to our environment.

For over a century, we’ve imported plants to South Florida from all over the world. Some were thought to be beneficial while others were just ornamental. Many couldn’t adapt and disappeared, while many more grew nicely here and caused no problems. But some found the environment perfect: they went to seed and spread to new territory, choking out the existing native plants that couldn’t compete with their vigorous growth and, in so doing, displaced the associated pollinators, birds and wildlife.

Once established, invasive species adversely affect native-plant communities, outcompeting and killing the existing native species and damaging natural ecosystems. We need to be proactive in addressing this issue to maintain the health, function and long-term productivity of our landscapes.

Because Florida’s climate is so accommodating, invasive species cause more crises here than anywhere else in the United States. All of Florida’s native habitats — marine, freshwater, and terrestrial — are threatened by invasives.

Tegu lizards can grow to 5 feet in length.
  • The omnivorous Argentine black-and-white tegu lizards can grow to 5 feet in length and feast on the eggs of ground nesting birds.
  • Burmese pythons have been spotted swimming from the Everglades to the Florida Keys. These invasive constrictors feed on native species and can grow upwards of 20 feet.
  • Beautiful and exotic lionfish devour smaller species of native fish and have no known predators.
  • Studies have shown that non-native wood boring insects promote disease and reduce a forest’s ability to capture and store carbon.

The cost of managing Florida’s invasive plants is upwards of $100 million every year. The cost of animal management could easily exceed this.

Lionfish devour smaller species of native fish and have no known predators.

Proper IDs

The first step in controlling invasives is identification: you can’t remove them if you don’t know what they are and you need to identify them so you don’t buy them accidentally. A few to be particularly aware of are: Japanese climbing ferns, melaleuca trees, Brazilian pepper, Australian pine, common lantana (Lantana camara), heavenly bamboo (Nandina domestica), Chinese privet (Ligustrum sinense), coral ardisia, and tropical or scarlet milkweed (Asclepias curassavica).

Tropical milkweed, Asclepius curassavica, is widely used and often sold as a native. It can cause monarchs to have a deadly parasitic infection called OE. If you have this milkweed, make sure to cut it back to the ground after monarch caterpillars have eaten the leaves.

Milkweed, you say? Isn’t that the essential host plant for the monarch butterfly? Yes, but it is important that you buy the native species, as the non-native can transmit the deadly OE bacterium to the monarch caterpillars, causing wing deformity, an inability to fly and ultimate death. Plant butterfly milkweed (Asclepias tuberosa) or rose milkweed (Asclepias incarnata): If you have the scarlet milkweed in your garden, as many of us do, make sure you cut it back to the ground after the caterpillars have defoliated it. This will decrease the risk of the OE bacterium.

Unfortunately, many of these invasives are still being sold at nurseries under incorrect names.

Native lantana has yellow flowers and is a low growing, spreading ground cover. It is not poisonous, but the invasive Lantana camara is.

One of the worst offenders is the invasive Lantana camara, often sold as the native Lantana depressa. The best way to avoid the invasive species is to understand the differences between the two.

Lantana camara, native to the West Indies and called shrub verbena, was loved by gardeners for its bright multicolored flowers, but it will dominate understory vegetation and is listed as a category I invasive. It has outcompeted our native Lantana depressa to the point that this is now listed as endangered.

How Sylvia Plath’s profound nature poetry elevates her writing beyond tragedy and despair

I are unable to stop creating poems! … They appear from the vocabulary of woods and animals and earth.

From a letter from Sylvia Plath to her mom, 1956

Preferred perceptions of Sylvia Plath are inclined to dwell on a deeply troubled version of the youthful poet because of to her very well-documented challenges with melancholy and the morbid imagery identified in some of her poetry. So the thought that character encouraged her producing could arrive as a surprise.

This despairing Plath is a much cry from the poet I have occur to know and admire – a poet who writes about the simple elegance of meadows and the tenacity of fungi as nicely as the splendours of rugged wilderness.

Plath’s fascination with the normal planet began in childhood, as she can make distinct in her essay Ocean 1212-W, in which she aspects the significance of the sea to her poetic creativity. This fascination in mother nature continued into adulthood, when she go through the work of biologists these types of as Rachel Carson, whom she writes about in her letters.

Any other poet with this qualifications would at least be credited with a passing interest in the organic entire world. Nonetheless, Plath’s untimely demise by suicide has skewed much interpretation of her poetry. The effectively-versed argument that Plath only takes advantage of character in her poetry as a “mirror to search deeper into herself, has pervaded critical writing on her get the job done from the 1960s to the 21st century.

It is this blinkered check out of Plath which has led to an oversight of the ecological significance of her poetry. As we go earlier the 60th anniversary of Plath’s death, it is time to embrace far more nuanced interpretations of her operate and to reimagine what her poetic legacy may look like.

Grand-scale all-natural magnificence

Plath liked the huge landscapes of countrywide parks as properly as smaller-scale wildernesses like people of England’s Yorkshire moors. In letters from 1956, she describes “the excellent luminous emerald lights” of the Yorkshire countryside, concluding that she has “never been so happy” in her existence as among the the “wild, purple moors”.

These excerpts from her letters resonate with the celebratory assertion in the poem Wuthering Heights that “there is no existence increased than the grasstops or the hearts of sheep”.

She found equivalent splendor in the countrywide parks of The united states and Canada, which she visited in the summertime of 1959. In letters from this period, she remarks that she has by no means found “such great country any place in the world”. No question these activities encouraged the chic depiction of the “dominance of rocks and woods” and “man-shaming clouds” in the poem Two Campers in Cloud State as effectively as the stunning “splurge of vermilions” she describes in the sunsets in excess of Algonquin National Park in Canada.

Magnificence in smaller sized areas

Having said that, it is not these grand poetic depictions of the all-natural globe which resonate the most with me. Even the most ardent town enthusiast can pause for a moment of question in entrance of millennia-outdated mountains, but couple among us can render the seemingly prosaic facets of the purely natural environment with the lyrical grandeur obvious in much of her crafting.

Plath’s journal entries, composed from the Yaddo writers’ retreat in upstate New York in the autumn of 1959, demonstrate a delicate desire in smaller information of the all-natural planet which numerous deem mundane or insignifcant. Coming throughout a patch of toadstools in the gardens at Yaddo, she observes these “round battering rams” with their “orange ruddy tops” and “pale lemon stems”.

Her poem Mushrooms captures significantly of this depth with the “soft fists” of the mushrooms which heave apart the yard “bedding”. “Nobody sees us”, the collective voice of the mushrooms in the poem declares, ahead of professing:

We shall by morning
Inherit the earth.
Our foot’s in the door.

In this poem, Plath emphasises the impressive things of the normal environment that numerous of us ignore or disregard. She highlights the dangers, as environmental historian William Cronon suggests, in appreciating only the sort of massive majestic landscapes found in national parks. By accomplishing so, Plath infers, we neglect the importance of mother nature in far more acquainted and regular locations.

Whilst Plath may well effectively be remembered for the melancholic despair of Sheep in Fog or the angry, flame-haired women of poems these as Girl Lazarus, it is also crucial that she is remembered for the ecological significance of her producing.

A wild rural Yorkshire landscape with a dry stane dyke and a few trees and hills in the distance.

Despite private challenges in her relationship and worsening mental well being, Plath’s curiosity in mother nature ongoing to inspire considerably of her late poetry. Her 1962 poem Amongst the Narcissi, for case in point, captures a poignant but standard moment of kinship concerning an elderly person, who enjoys the “little flocks” of flowers in his garden, and the bouquets on their own who “look up” from the flowerbeds to him, “like children”.

Just like the modest flock of lilac crocuses I was shocked to find rising amid the damaged paving in my possess considerably-neglected back garden, Plath’s poetry continually surprises me with its uncanny capacity to see the unseen in nature. This kind of deeply felt attunement to mother nature warrants to be recognised as part of the wealthy and multifaceted legacy of her function.

Lincoln builder connects landscapes and wildlife to dream homes

Progress: Sam Swartz, 2.8

Sam Swartz pivoted from photography to the business world of home design and construction and two years ago started his own business, True North Custom Homes.

It may not seem so at first blush, but Sam Swartz’s decision to transition from his former career to his present one was picture perfect.

Moving from a flourishing vocation in fine arts photography to home building doesn’t appear to connect, but Swartz can cite numerous ways his first career benefits planning and constructing dream homes.

He put down his camera and moved into home building in 2016, going from an artist behind the camera to an artisan in the business world of home design and construction. Two years ago, he started a new business, True North Custom Homes.

“We draw everything up from scratch with the clients and bring all of their dreams to the forefront,” Swartz said.

Photography gave the homebuilder an eye for design and acute attention to detail. He also understands how light can be incorporated in a home to create a dramatic look or soul-soothing effect. It’s what sets True North apart, he said.

Sam Swartz’s company, True North Custom Homes, is building this 5,600-square-foot home east of the city.

It’s important to get the details right, he said. He learned that from both framing the perfect outdoor photograph and from making the bride and the wedding party happy with those big day photos. Certainly, you don’t get a second shot at the wedding. And with wildlife and natural settings everything can change in the blink of an eye.

He didn’t know it at the time, but those years of capturing flawless images were the greatest of training for custom home building, he said.

With careful planning and attention, “we make sure that drywall corners and cabinetry and flooring details are done as perfectly as possible,” he said.

The clients that True North serves have housing needs that are different from first- and second-time homebuyers. That could be right-sizing homes for those who want their square footage used in different ways than when they had little kids running around the house, or coming up with a personalized lock-it-and-leave plan for people who spend part of the year in Nebraska and the rest in different climes.

Swartz’s fine art photography also taught him the importance of hitting deadlines, executing timelines, scheduling and budgets, and delivering on expectations.

“I’m big on process,” he said.

His first career took him to 36 U.S. national parks, six Canadian national parks, the Caribbean, Hawaii and numerous states to shoot prizewinning pictures, portraits and wildlife prints, many that were published internationally.

A career in photography took Sam Swartz to 36 U.S. national parks, six Canadian national parks, the Caribbean, Hawaii and numerous states to shoot prizewinning pictures, portraits and wildlife prints, like this photo of a polar bear looking straight into the camera.

It also took him away from his family, which is why in 2016 he gave up his studio and the adventure travel. His kids were 6 and 1, and his wife Briana was too often filling in the gaps of raising their family. He needed more control of his nights and weekends, and less of being gone from home for a week or two at a time.

He and Briana met while both were attending Lincoln Christian High School. She graduated in 2001 and he in 2002. They married in 2003.

The company they started got its name because they believe the home is the family’s core for finding its right direction, Swartz said.

“For me, going back home is my true north, the axis my world spins on,” he said.

With careful planning and attention, “we make sure that drywall corners and cabinetry and flooring details are done as perfectly as possible,” said Sam Swartz of True North Custom Homes.

It’s how they focus their life and make decisions.

Their faith also plays a big role in that, he said, and he brings that into the business conversation when he can.

“It’s a great place to connect with people and (talk about) my motivations, if people ask,” he said. “If not, I believe business is business and can leave them separate, too.”

Swartz has always believed in giving back with service to his community, so as a board member of the Homebuilders Association of Lincoln he came up with the idea of organizing a car show to raise money for scholarships for young men and women who want to join the trades industry. Last year, it raised more than $10,000 for those scholarships, he said. He’s also participated in the construction of Habitat for Humanity homes.

He’s excited to talk about a project he is working on now with Kelly Sparr, the daughter of one of True North’s employees who has had a long-time dream of opening an independent hospice house. Sparr helped him understand the need for independent hospice facilities in Lincoln and other Nebraska communities, he said.

Progress: Sam Swartz, 2.8

With careful planning and attention, “we make sure that drywall corners and cabinetry and flooring details are done as perfectly as possible,” home builder Sam Swartz said.

It has been a dream of hers since she was a teenager, when she began working in long-term care at age 15 as a nursing assistant. She’s a licensed practical nurse now, and has worked as a nursing care manager, assistant director of nursing and a teacher in the Southeast Community College nursing program.

Seven years ago, she began actively planning and seeking a location for a hospice house. Teaming up with Swartz brought her dream to reality of caring for people in that last stage of life, from children to older adults, she said.

Swartz purchased a former memory care building at 17th and Superior streets that will become The Grace Place, a 14-bed hospice house set to open in May or June. They took ideas from the custom homes of Swartz’s business to make it homelike, with innovative indoor spaces for clients and families, outdoor space and a bright exterior, he said.

Independent hospice facilities in Lincoln have waiting lists, and hospital discharge planners say they have trouble locating beds for patients who need them, Sparr said.

At The Grace Place people will get 24-hour care, under the direction of a hospice nurse or doctor, with a staff that will help with their medications and other needs. The Grace Place will be licensed as an assisted living facility, Sparr said.

They will also establish a nonprofit foundation to help fund care for people who can’t afford it, she said. They hope to work with the local Veterans Administration to serve that population, too.

“We want our care to be very holistic focused,” she said, “so we’re not just caring for the physical being of the person, but we’re meeting all their spiritual needs, their emotional needs. That will make us a little bit different, I think.”

Casa Azucar is a tropical home with a modern twist

Casa Azucar was born from a client’s dream to dwell in a ‘habitable yard pavilion’. Situated in Costa Rica, the new dwelling was conceived as a lush eco-friendly getaway for its house owners. Its architects, San José-based Studio Saxe, obliged, crafting a tropical retreat with a solid up to date twist that ticks all the appropriate boxes.

The property’s plot is located in the coronary heart of the city of Nosara, which meant that while it is shut to the seaside and nearby facilities, the perception of seclusion and verdant environment the shoppers were being right after were being probably trickier to recreate. The remedy to this problem came in the condition of a compact seasonal creek that operates across the web site and serves as a wildlife corridor. ‘We decided to emphasis our focus on making the feeling of a secluded oasis, merging architecture and landscape design to cautiously body all sights toward the creek and the wildlife that spawned from there. The property in change is conceived more like a habitable back garden pavilion,’ the architects produce.

Boston’s SoWa district is acknowledged for the scores of artist studios and galleries that fill its former factories, not to point out weekly markets that attract throngs of buyers and a fleet of meals trucks. But it has not long ago welcomed a bevy of new showrooms, layout studios, and architecture companies, also. A lot of have moved into 500 Harrison Avenue, a setting up that is undergone major renovations considering the fact that suffering hurt from a 2020 water-primary break. Now, developer GTI Homes has rebranded the sophisticated as the SoWa Art + Structure Heart, and—thanks in aspect to facet consequences of the biotech growth in the Seaport and Cambridge—this extend of the South Finish is commencing to really feel like the hub of the city’s design neighborhood.

The newcomers include things like inside designer Charles Spada, who’d expended 25 yrs at the Boston Structure Middle in the Seaport. When new house owners started consolidating showroom place to draw lab tenants to the higher floors, he decided against signing a new lease, rather shifting his trove of antiques, wallcoverings, and other furnishings to 500 Harrison. “It’s become an spot packed with inside layout workplaces, so you have got a ready-made audience,” states Spada, who unveiled his showroom in February 2022. “The potential for creating a new design heart below is quite actual, and I’m happy to be an early element of it.”
