Downtown loft reflects owner’s passion for art and design | Home & Garden

The spacious downtown loft of stylist/salon owner Steve Lacy is a perfect reflection of his personal style and the things he loves. He moved in less than a year ago and has spent a great deal of time since making the space feel like home. Located in the Bankers Lofts building, its open layout and significant square footage, particularly for a one-bedroom, instantly drew him in.

Lacy had been living in another, smaller loft downtown and considering a move to Houston before finding the apartment. When he decided to stay in St. Louis, he started looking for a new permanent home online, but his search ended the moment he walked into the loft.

“I wasn’t even out the door and had the application filled out,” he laughs. “When I saw it, I knew it had my name written all over it. I never had enough space to display my art.”

The large living space allowed Lacy to create several seating areas for relaxing and entertaining, and even have a real dining “room” in addition to the kitchen island. This, he says, is a departure from many of the newer-built one-bedroom lofts, which tend to be much smaller.

People are also reading…

“You might barely get a couch and a chair and a couple barstools in there,” he says of other spaces he saw. “I have plenty of room to have my furniture displayed, plenty of room to move around. I like to entertain, too, so everyone can sit and chill.”

Enormous windows fill the far wall of the living room, overlooking Washington Avenue and flooding the space with natural light. High wood beamed ceilings with exposed ductwork and polished concrete floors are hallmarks of loft living.

Lacy has filled the space with a mix of contemporary furniture and accessories purchased at various favorite retailers including Restoration Hardware, Arhaus, Wayfair, Etsy and Amazon.

“I like a modern look with an eclectic feel,” he says. “The couch is sort of traditional, but then I like to pair something odd with it — whatever reflects me. I just keep moving it around until I like how it looks.”

A vibrant piece of art infused on metal in a splatter-painted frame that Lacy acquired at a gallery in Houston hang in the entry foyer.

Self-described as “obsessed with coffee table books,” Lacy has a huge collection that is displayed on nearly every surface, mostly focused on topics of art and design.

A long wall stretching all the way from the end of the living room down the hallway to the bedroom area makes the perfect gallery for Lacy’s favorite framed prints, canvases and posters that he’s collected over the years — mostly by Black artists or reflecting Black culture. A favorite is an ornately framed black and white photograph by American photographer Gordon Parks depicting three women protesting segregation.

Lining either side of the hallway is Lacy’s collection of framed movie posters from some of his favorite films, as well framed Playbills from productions he attended of “Dreamgirls” and “The Color Purple.”

The bedroom suite is tucked away at the back of the loft, separated from the main living space, making it serene and quiet. With a walk-in closet and large bathroom, it provides a relaxing retreat. A tall, glass display case houses another of Lacy’s obsessions — cologne — with numerous collectible bottles of his favorite fragrances carefully arranged on its shelves.

In addition to its convenient location, the building offers a small fitness room and two shared rooftop deck areas with grills and seating for outdoor entertaining city-style. Now that he’s fully settled, Lacy couldn’t be happier with the move, and has enjoyed meeting some of his neighbors.

“I like the space and I was able to put together my own style and have enough room,” he says. “I’ve lived a lot of places downtown, and this finally feels comfortable.”

Home & Design | Pop Art

Gladys Tay is no stranger to sourcing and amassing daring pop artwork and exclusive iconography that has defined American culture—from lifetime-size Coke bottles and Crest toothpaste signage to imagery that evokes Americana throughout time. The vintage artwork dealer, who arrived to the States from Singapore, is a connoisseur of the innovative and evocative.

In Creatives in Dialogue, a common column debuting this concern, editor at big Nicole Crowder will sign up for artists and designers across a number of disciplines to faucet into the ethos all over their creativity, their perform, and the satisfaction they derive from artwork and room earning. The subsequent is an excerpt of Crowder’s dialogue with Gladys Tay at the designer’s household in Shoreview.

Q: What inspires you to search for out those artworks that are unconventional and could even be thought of oddities of layout?

A: Humor is very important to me, and of system parts that bring again recollections and that mark gatherings in my everyday living.

Q: So do you discover yourself considering a good deal about nostalgia in your operate?

A: My father traveled a lot when I was rising up. When he traveled, he would deliver me points that I could not uncover in Singapore. So I try to remember my initially 12 months of quality faculty, he acquired me a purple backpack mainly because that was the only way I could decorate myself, simply because college was quite limited. Everyone had to have white footwear, white socks, and I was restricted to how numerous bows I could have in my hair, the uniform I wore, etcetera. The way I could express myself was like a way for me to have a minor little bit of enjoyment. I appreciate the colour crimson, and it has marked so many enjoyment points in my existence.

Q: Do you come across oneself staying hyperaware of seeking to use bold hues, bold prints and objects to split exterior of a structure box? And if so, what retains you curious in your line of work to proceed running in these a way?

A: This goes again to my childhood, too. My father was type of a rule breaker. In the ’90s, Singapore banned chewing gum, so if you were being caught with gum, they would fantastic you. So he would travel to Japan and carry gum residence. And I acquired so thrilled since Japanese packaging is so excellent! It is incredibly intelligent, really very. For me, that’s when I realized that I was actually in love with matters that had been unheard of, matters that not a lot of people today could possibly have been drawn to. I think that is where by my really like of coloration comes in. Lots of people, I think, are worried of coloration, as well. I was introduced up in this way. It’s Alright to consider dangers or split regulations. You really don’t have to be so rigid. For me, it’s extra about if I adore hot pink, for instance, there will be incredibly hot pink here. I don’t care what other people say.

Q: How would you encourage a person to give on their own authorization to crack their have policies and integrate bolder coloration, more substantial prints in their property designs?

A: I would start out by having them assume about how shades influence them, mainly because colours evoke so significantly emotion, and to don’t forget that there are no regulations when it will come to color. It is truly about your specific encounter with it and how it makes you experience. I usually say black can be present day and darkish, but it can also be so pretty. It depends how you want to convey it. You do not have to dedicate to a huge wall that is one particular color from time to time just carry a tiny piece of what you like. If you know that you want a blue sofa but you don’t want to go also daring with a colourful wall, then accent the room with yellow flowers fairly than paint a wall yellow.

Q: With all the objects that you come across in your work, what is your considered method for choosing on which objects you actually want to continue to keep or obtain?

A: [Laughs] To be genuine, there actually isn’t even a imagined procedure! My rule is obtain anything that you appreciate. Do not overthink it, particularly when it comes to vintage. When you imagine as well much, it’s absent and you could possibly regret it. If you see it and your partner asks you what it is, disregard him! [Laughs] If you enjoy anything, you will the natural way uncover a position for it in your household.

Q: What imaginative house have you located you evolving into or out of personally as of late?

A: I’m leaning into the pop culture place currently. I am in a room exactly where I am looking for the splendor that the entire world has and pondering about how the ’80s and the ’90s had been and how a lot joy and independence and coloration we had. And I’m hoping to draw inspiration from those eras to see what I can deliver forward with the layouts and the objects that I’m sourcing. Between everything with Black Life Issue and the lockdown and the latest war, I want to target on the superior and the attractiveness that is occurring and carry that ahead and evolve.

The largest activity at hand was the overhaul of the galley kitchen area, a relic of the home’s previous empty-nest proprietor, who was generally on the highway. “For us, it’s a loved ones meal and hangout house,” the home-owner describes. Consequently, a range of 1st-ground areas—the mudroom, cooking zone, and breakfast nook—were put together into a single open up and shiny kitchen during a next phase of the renovation.

A welcoming environment extends through the floor stage, in which public areas—including a sitting down area and burnt orange bar room—are stationed. The eating space is the place the Zaha Hadid desk receives a starring role, many thanks in element to an invisible intervention from Dorsey: To counter the platform’s obviously sloping surface, the designer fashioned a glass best that keeps plates, eyeglasses, and silverware from sliding.

The superior-ceilinged upstairs bedrooms are equally stuffed with furnishings by A-list designers and popular artists—Kelly Wearstler and Sol LeWitt, for starters. Still there are also additional attainable items, like a Space and Board mattress in the guest home, that strike the mark in phrases of both of those eye-catching layout and accessibility.

As a whole, the undertaking retains the traits the client claims he sought out in his option of an interior designer—a modern day sensibility and abiding feeling of convenience. Even amongst Warhols, LeWitts, and statement-building Italian sofas, Dorsey says, “they needed it to be livable.”
