Preserving the gloriously kitschy home stylings of bygone eras, one Instagram post at a time

When Sue Liedke commenced home searching in South Philadelphia in 2019, she was drawn to households that appeared frozen in time, portals to a fabulously kitschy earlier. Those getting older rowhouses in the neighborhood with signature South Philly styles, like unique mid-century doorways, sweeping archways, and exquisite wrought-iron stairways. Rowhouses concealing lonely, sunlit rooms properly preserved in the showy stylings of bygone eras, from the 1960s and 1970s, when South Philadelphians, not to be stymied by matters like sq. footage, tackled home decor with a boldness and panache all their have. When carpets ended up shag, mirrors ended up smoked, and filth-floor cellars were being transformed into groovy basement bars.…

Tips for designing your home slowly, over time

Comment on this tale Comment If television reveals have you convinced that a journal-ready household can be reached in a snap, professional designers will quickly rid you of that notion. “There is this fantasy of an HGTV-model expose, walking into a house which is 100 per cent carried out — possibly by you or a decorator — but in fact, that occurs for quite several,” states Colleen Simonds, a designer based in Pittsburgh. And, genuinely, who desires a place that seems as if it was assembled all at after, giving furniture showroom vibes? Simonds and other designers concur that thoughtfully curating a place around time yields more enjoyable outcomes. So…

Women’s History Month Is The Time To Explore The Gardens Of Beatrix Farrand

Lover’s Lane Pool at Dumbarton Oaks in Washington, D.C. Roger Foley Beatrix Farrand, one particular of America’s best landscape architects, was born 150 decades back. The anniversary arrives at a excellent time to celebrate her function: many of her crucial gardens are going through comprehensive restoration, a formerly non-public backyard garden is now open up to the community, and a lavishly-illustrated biography is heading for publication. Florida’s urban stormwater ponds are net sources of carbon to the atmosphere despite increased carbon burial over time

Carbon burial rates increased with pond age Areal and annual C burial rates were calculated for four to six sediment cores extracted per pond in June 2019 using total OC (TOC), dry weight, and piston corer dimensions. Mean TOC content in whole cores of ponds ranged from 1.7 to 26.5{6d6906d986cb38e604952ede6d65f3d49470e23f1a526661621333fa74363c48} (Table 1 and Supplementary Fig. 1). The areal OC stock ranged from 306 ± 8.2 g OC m−2 in Pond 14 (14-year-old pond) to 7380 ± 56.1 g OC m−2 in Pond 34 (34-year-old pond), increasing linearly with increasing pond age (R2 = 0.99, p < 0.001, Fig. 1a and Table 1). Scaling this OC stock by pond age (assuming constant burial rates over time) yields estimated annual burial rates ranging from 21.8 ± 7.5 g OC m−2 y−1 in Pond 14 to 217 ± 50.2 g OC m−2 y−1…

These African heritage sites are under threat from rising seas, but there’s still time to save them

(CNN) — On the shores of North Africa, ancient cities have stood for millennia. The columns of Carthage, in modern-day Tunisia, are a reminder of the once bustling Phoenician and Roman port, and along the coast in what’s now Libya, lie the majestic ruins of Sabratha’s Roman amphitheater close — perhaps too close — to the sea. Africa’s iconic natural sites date back even further, such as the ancient coral reef of the Seychelles’ Aldabra Atoll in the Indian Ocean, thought to be around 125,000 years old. But extreme weather events and rising sea levels mean that all three — and around 190 other spectacular heritage sites that line Africa’s…
